Carl Vant — Midnight Paris
Carl Vant · Acrylic on canvas
Midnight Paris is half memory, half daydream. A woman pauses beneath a bunch of balloons, the Eiffel Tower rising behind her through a collage of hearts, graffiti and Chanel No 5 — painted the way Paris feels at midnight rather than the way it looks in a photo.
The figure was painted first, in clean black lines and soft skin tones. The background was built up afterwards in loose layers of colour, and the big red PARIS lettering was the very last thing to go on.
From blank canvas to finished piece
Follow the painting as it takes shape in Carl's studio, step by step.
- Step 01
First layers
The figure, the balloons and the pink car come first. Behind them the canvas is still almost bare, with only faint pencil lines showing where the Eiffel Tower will go.
- Step 02
At the desk
Carl paints at his desk at home, a lamp angled over the canvas and his reference on the phone in his hand.

- Step 03
The final details
The background fills up with colour, hearts and the Eiffel Tower. Only the big PARIS lettering along the bottom is still waiting in pencil.

- Finished
Midnight Paris
Every layer in place: the finished original, ready to leave the studio.
